A search of the web came up with a number of people offering plans for building your own kayak. There are two major kinds of wooden kayaks - strip-built or bent-plywood. I chose the strip-built type since I like the way it looks and it seemed to offer more woodworking fun in the making. Some of the plans I looked at were from Guillemot, Chesapeake Light Craft, Pygmy Boats Inc (plywood), Laughing Loon, and Green Valley Boat Works.
My friend Lisa and I read the specs for each and we decided that the Georgian Bay© from Laughing Loon was the one for me. Below is a drawing showing the Georgian Bay:

I sent my $95 bucks off and waited for the plans.
